Do you Snore excessively?

Over 71 million people snore when they sleep. When a sleeper's airway becomes narrow, the suction created while breathing causes the softer tissues of your airway to collapse inward and touch each other. As the tissues vibrate and touch, the sound created is what we hear as snoring. Blockage due to congestion, poor muscle tone and fatty deposits in the throat can make snoring worse.

Do You Have Sleep Apnea?

Did you know that Sleep Apnea can be fatal?

Sleep Apnea is a condition that results when the effects of snoring reach an extreme. Rather than vibrating together, the soft tissues collapse and completely block all airflow. The blockage can last from 10 seconds to a minute. People that suffer from Sleep Apnea may be chronically sleep-deprived and/or be starving their brains for oxygen. The body begins to struggle for oxygen, and this struggle can result in rousing the sleeper, completely waking the sleeper, or, in the worst cases, suffocate the sleeper.

What can you do to help your Sleep Apnea / Snoring?

1. Determine the root cause of your snoring:

  • Breathing Problems - congestion or temporary blockage.
  • Physical/Structural Problem within your nose - a deviated septum as a result of physical trauma or birth defect.
  • Infection - swollen tonsils or adenoids.
  • Weight Gain - fatty deposits on the inside of the throat that narrow the airway.
  • Alcohol and cigarette use - Alcohol relaxing the muscles and narrowing the airways and cigarettes inflame the airways and cause congestion.
  • Some medications - Antihistamines dry out your airways and tranquilizers relax the muscles in your throat.
  • Aging - the passage of time causes poorer muscle tone and sagging of internal tissues.
  • Sleeping on your back> - this position can cause your mouth to drop open and makes you more likely to breath through your mouth, which makes you more prone to snoring. Gravity also flattens out the airway increasing the tendency to vibrate.
  • 2. Determine your options for treatment

  • Medication - can be used to treat inflamation and ongestion, but may have unwanted side effects.
  • Snore-Stop Sprays - these offer some relief from the vibration caused by snoring by lubricating the air passages.
  • Surgery - there are several different types of surgery that can correct certain conditions, such as removing the tonsils or uvula. (This does not apply to most , but is sometimes necessary.)
  • Devices - Chin straps to keep the mouth closed, Nasal strips to keep your air passages open if you suffer from congestion, or Sleep Cushions (An Anti-Snore Pillow).
